Portobello Toddlers Hut

the oldest community run, self-funded childcare facility in the UK

Established in 1929, Portobello Toddlers Hut playgroup provides a safe and stimulating environment for children to socialise and interact.

The children are recognised as individuals as well as part of the group, and are given the opportunity to learn and develop at their own rate in an environment that is free from prejudice and discrimination. Their development and independence is encouraged through play, activities and experiences.

Portobello Toddlers Hut playgroup provides a service for children from 2.5 to 5 years old. There is a waiting list in operation, children can be added at 2 years old. Portobello Toddlers Hut is a voluntary non-partner provider service, with 18 children, 3 qualified staff and a parent helper in every session. There is indoor/outdoor free play and a snack is provided. Please note that Portobello Toddlers Hut is open only during Term time.

I love the friendly, calm and reassuring atmosphere.

I like the balance between freedom and routine that the children get.

Fees and available places

Please see our Facebook page for current fees or contact Portobello Toddlers Hut for information on current fees and available places.

Parents/carers take a turn on rota duty, typically once per term. This gives parents and carers a great opportunity to engage with the setting and become more involved with the group.

Toileting Requirements

Children do not need to be toilet trained to attend the playgroup. Staff will support your child in all their toileting requirements, aiming to maintain consistency with any routine or training taking place at home.

Portobello Toddlers Hut

I like that the focus is on learning through play.

Inside the Portobello Toddlers Hut

Portobello Toddlers Hut is a self-funding playgroup and a registered charity. Along with the advantage of our own premises, we have the responsibilities of the upkeep and maintenance of the building and equipment. Consequently we need support in our various fundraising activities throughout the year. Parents and carers will be asked to support Toddlers Hut in various ways throughout the year. Please check our Facebook page for any upcoming fundraising events.

The location of Toddlers Hut is fantastic and the staff are excellent.
